Computer Skills

Today’s successful college student is computer literate, and additional computing skills are often necessary for success in online courses. This check list of basic skills provides you with examples of what skills and experiences are needed to succeed in any Internet course offered by MCC.

  • Familiar with the Internet, including how to access and navigate the World Wide Web.
  • Experience with a word processing package and common document file formats.
  • Experience with E-mail and an understanding of how to create and attach documents to an e-mail message.
  • Familiarity with discussion/messaging boards or blogs.

    Internet Skills

    Here are some key internet skills you should know (or learn) before taking a course that uses Blackboard:

  • Experience with Internet Explorer.
  • URLs and how to use these to access web sites (such as http://distance.mcckc.edu or http://bboard.mcckc.edu )
  • Save a URL under Favorites in Internet Explorer.
  • Understand the terms "search engine" and Google, and how these apply to finding web sites on the Internet.
  • Know how to save information to the desktop or to a disk
  • Know how to cut and paste information from a search engine to the desktop or a document.


  • Word Processing

    Here is a list of the common types of skills you will need to have regarding word processing. Because of the number of different word processors available to students, you need to understand certain file format types.

  • Rich Text Format (.rtf), and how to either Save As or convert other file formats (.doc, etc) to this format.
  • Understand at least one way to cut/copy/paste text in documents.
